The Sounds of the Shofar

1Cr 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

1Cr 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

The Four Traditional Shofar Blasts

God has used the shofar in the past for various reasons. God has used the blast of the shofar for the people to come and worship him. God has also used it as a warning of his impending judgement on the nation of Israel. The watchmen on the walls would have their shofars to blast a warning of an approaching enemy and the shofar was also used as a weapon of war by the Israelites to bring down walls and to instill fear into their enemies.

Tekiah
Literally ‘blast’, is a short blast to gain attention.

Shevarim
‘Quavers’ are three short blasts that increase in volume, denoting brokenness and/or humility.

Teruah
A ‘shout’, is a series of nine short, quick succession tones that call for movement or preparedness to move from the camp, or into a battle.

Tekiah haGodolah
The Great Trumpet. This is the sound calling for the time to leave. This is the Last Trumpet sound mentioned in I Thessalonians 4:16.
